Karukera Black Edition Alligator
Most enjoy the smooth, woody, bourbon‑like character and gentle agricole touch. Critics find it a bit simple, overly roasted and lacking finish. Consensus: a solid, approachable smoked‑oak agricole.
Bourbon and whisky drinkers, and agricole-curious rum fans who enjoy toasted oak, light smoke and vanilla more than intense grassy notes or high proof.

How does this rum taste?
Smoky, bourbon‑style agricole sipper
If you enjoy bourbon‑cask rums or toasted‑oak whiskies, this is an easy crossover: agricole base, but the alligator‑char barrel and smooth 45% ABV keep it friendly and familiar.
Those wanting bright, vegetal agricole character, high complexity, or very long finishes; also anyone who dislikes smoky or charred barrel flavors.

Bought this Rhum from Catawiki to a very good price together with some other bottles. Karukera is produced by the Esperance distillery in Guadeloupe that also produces Longuetau. Karukera is the name the indigenous people called their island which means 'The island of beautiful waters'. It’s distilled in the distillery’s column still, but the details how it has been aged differs, some says for seven years in French bourbon and cognac barrels others says five years in new charred barrels. Maybe there are two different ones. Overall a super smooth and round Rhum that probably is a very good introduction to Rhum from Guadeloupe.
Pleasant rum, but nothing more.
Auto-translated08.01.2022 Nice little tasting at my home with a few colleagues. Notes Medium dark in colour. Nose Light wood, fresh, orange, light citrus, nutts, light mint. Palate Light wood, faint smoke, nutts, orange, spicy, citrus, sugarcane, light vegetal. Finish Medium long, light wood, roasted, sugarcane, medium spicy, light chocolate.
No. 2 of the advent calendar of La Route des Rhums. Another good agricole, not much in this calendar. This one is again very woody and spicy, some vanilla is recognizable, as well as dark chocolate.
