Excellence Rhum Caroni 1998
This Caroni leans unexpectedly mild, offering floral, fruity, and vegetative tones over the classic dirty tar. Not for Caroni purists, but worth a taste if you’re after a lighter, more nuanced Trinidad rum.
Fruit, dirty notes, and barrel—a restrained, lighter Caroni profile.

How does this rum taste?
- relatively easy on the palate
- intense and savoureux... complexe et évolue
- a more fruity Caroni
Excellence Rhum’s 1998 Caroni draws diverse reactions for its mix of dried fruit, barrel, and signature ‘dirty’ and rubber notes, with ‘spice’ and roasted almond surfacing often. While the nose gets called ‘fruity, röstig und rund’ (Christian Rudt), others spot agricole vibes—“agricole in a Caroni barrel” (Galli33). The dirty side is present, yet lighter than expected. Some appreciate the “mega entspannter Caroni” (Tschusikowsky), but debate around price and the atypical, less heavy Caroni style is consistent. Still, for those into complexity, one user dubbed it “intense and savoureux… complexe et évolue” (Jeremy Roger 🇫🇷).

To Caroni
"Good Caroni from 1998. But similarly to the CDI it is not too expressive and lacks some kind of eye (or tongue?) catcher."
"For the ABV mega relaxed Caroni. Good alcohol integration. Good profile, not 0815 but nothing extraordinary. On the palate it falls slightly."
"#11th dec RumXCalendar Blind tasting: Nose: woody, tar, dirty, spicy Mouth: agricole, grass, toasted, rosted almonds, barrel, oak Finish: long, barrel, oak, dry, tannins, astringent It’s a untypical, strange caroni 🤪It’s OK, but didn’t blow my mind. The alcohol isn’t integrated well and the price tag way toooo high. Buuh looks like a crazy agricole in a Caroni barrel. My prediction Guadeloupe. ca.60% approx. 20 Years"
"Ein fruchtiger Caroni ohne großen Ecken und Kanten."
