How does this rum taste?
- Unique and dynamic flavor profile
- Intriguing vegetal and anise notes
- Appealing tropical and caramel aromas
The Indian Ocean Stills rum, produced by Chamarel Distillery in Mauritius and bottled by Velier, is crafted from sugar cane juice using a column still, aged for four years. At 58% ABV, it presents an intriguing profile with aromas of vanilla, mirabelle plum, and cognac, while its taste combines vegetal, anise, and slight caramel notes. Users note its dynamic evolution from nose to palate, a common trait among agricoles. It has a robust alcohol presence that some find overpowering, indicating it might benefit from further aging. While some appreciate its complex composition and uniqueness, others feel it lacks integration and depth, although it remains a solid representation of Mauritian rum.

"Etwas zu alkoholisch."
"As you would expect from the score, not a real highlight ... but not too bad either. Stone fruit and apple with aniseed, vanilla and vegetal notes as well as some wood and tobacco. A little too alcoholic and rather nothing you would need a bottle of (even if it is quite nice itself)"
"Not bad, but a rum too expression- and profile-less. Could probably have used a few more years of storage - especially in the mouth, the alcohol still stands out noticeably even after some time in the air, the rest of the bouquet is pleasing, but too interchangeable. A pleasing drop, not a highlight. There are more interesting from Chamarel, although at least so far primarily rums of comparatively younger age (and also rather rarely in barrel strength) are bottled there."
"This rum was spectacular in the way that the nose was significantly different from the palate. The nose is light and elegant with tropical fruits, grass and some vanilla. The palate on the other hand is fruity with a warm touch and a lightly smoky wood flavour. The finish is fruity with chocolate and a very light pinch of barrel. Price to quality is very good."
