To be honest, this one is better than expected. A relatively sweet nose consisting mainly of caramel. Also spicy and woody. The palate is also sweet in the form of caramel, honey and chocolate.
It’s an incredible rum but I was a bit disappointed when it came to taste, just because I have such a high bar for Privateer. On the nose it was not disappointing at all! It was up there with what you would expect from the hands-down best North American rum producer. I got very defined creamsicle, which doubles as orange peel and zest. Also got lightly toasted oak, vanilla bean, wheated bourbon (reminded me a lot of Weller SP), cherry gummy bear, teriyaki beef jerky and a bit of honey. On the palate, like I said, not as impressive for me as other Privateers I’ve tried, but still amazingly delicious! I got very mild sweetness, but also dried lime, rye-whiskey kind of spiciness, and some honey. I found it very Spanish-style like, which I love. The taste could be comparable with Don Q Gran Añejo but just a tiny bit more deep. The finish was kind of long and spicy with rye, more rye, and some wood tea.
Alcohol could be much better integrated. Slightly caramel sweetness covers a lot, but I've had that with every Privateer bottling so far. In addition, however, comes a really intense pineapple note. Not really a bad rum, but remains just one-dimensional.
A truly fantastic selection. This one stuck out to me with much more notable citrus than almost any other rum I’ve had, but in a very positive way. That was the most notable scent with some other lighter sweeter notes. The taste was similar with the citrus notes while being very smooth.
