How does this rum taste?
- tones of vanille and karamel
- really not bad at all
- captures well price benefit
Abuelo Añejo from Panama’s Varela Hermanos distillery hits lots of familiar rum territory: vanilla, caramel, and woody notes run the show. Reviewers call it “really smooth... tones of vanille and karamel” (Anthony Marijnissen), with a subtle sweetness and a bit of bourbon or whisky in the finish. The woodiness is evident on both nose and palate—“prevažuje dřevitá chuť, spíše sladší” (Martin Včeliš)—while some find it a touch too simple or light on spice. Many see it as “einfach und lecker” (Lutz Lungershausen), a no‑nonsense sipper or, as Radek Illík says, “vynikající na short drink” when mixed.

"A little Abuelo tasting. Somehow I like this rum. A nice vanilla and caramel note here too. Slightly sweet, but completely ok. Not quite as good as the previous two, but still better than the classic average rum."
"I like the fruity nose a little better than the complex but average palate. More individual aromas develop in the finish. Nothing disturbs here, simple and delicious."
"A nice sipper. Nothing special but for the price it's really not bad at all. More woody than fruity. The taste and finish bring strong creme brulee notes for me."
"Ok as a sipper but i think it would be a good choice for cocktails."
