Good and well balanced rum. The alcohol is integrated well. Nose: coconut and peanut butter and some floral notes. Mouth: coconut, citrus, roasted almonds, light and dry Finish: Dry, roasted almonds, oak, black tea
A pretty American rum that plays the gourmet card. The nose plays on a highly concentrated register of butter, candied fruit, coconut bits, caramel and spices. A floral fragrance grazes the nostrils and refreshes this very gourmand atmosphere. A rather promising nose for the future. The palate opens gently, with notes of bourbon, almond, coconut and caramel. The American oak cask also lends a typical vanilla and spice flavour, without being overpowering. The floral side is still succinctly present. Overall, the alcohol is well integrated behind this syrupy juice. The finish, of decent length, smothers the fruit with its warmth, leaving only a duel between spicy, toasty notes and a flowing, slightly honeyed caramel with candied notes. Perhaps not the deepest rum ever, but the little floral note is pleasant enough, as is the price, which is not so out of touch with the sad reality of the rum world.
at full disclosure, this is a rum for bourbon lovers. this isn’t to say that you wouldn’t enjoy it if you don’t like bourbon, but if you do like bourbon, you will probably really like it. as for me, i seldom drink bourbon, but i’ve had enough to know that this rum smells and (mostly) tastes like a good bourbon. there’s something about the way it finishes that tells you it’s rum, but it would have the potential of fooling me if i didn’t know any better. the freshness of the oak, almost like pencil shavings, and the forray of fruits were very pleasant, though lacking in depth if anything. privateer new england reserve is a familiar taste with some rum flair.
