Diplomático / Botucal Single Vintage 2004 from DUSA is a Venezuelan rum that brings forward recurring notes of vanilla, chocolate, and orange—classic for Botucal—along with nuances of caramel and gentle spice. The sweetness level is subject to debate: "a little too sweet even though the ABV of 43% balance[s] the sweetness," notes Stefan Persson, while Oliver calls it "angenehmer Diplomatico ohne zu dominante Süße." There’s also talk of balanced bitterness and a hint of sherry from the finish. A touch of nuts, candied figs, and roasty aromas round out the picture, stitching together a Cuban-style sip best suited for those who appreciate softness but not cloying sugar.

"Have had this one for a while together with three other of the single vintages and this is the first one I open. I think it has a nuanced, complex and a elegant taste of almonds, nuts, chocolate, yellow fruits such as orange, arrack and with a hint of candied figs. The Sherry finish is also clearly recognizable. The finish is quite long. Unfortunately I think it’s a little too sweet even though the ABV of 43% balance the sweetness to a certain grade. "
"This is a very well balanced rum from the single vintage releases. I have almost all of these vintages and I like them a lot. Like the others, this one is lightly sweet, but not as sweet as the 2005 version. The nose is wonderful and the palate is well balanced between sweet and bitterness and spices."
