How does this rum taste?
The Heavy Trinidad Rum HTR, distilled in 1983 at the Caroni Distillery and bottled by Velier, is a complex and rare spirit with only 20,048 bottles available. Aged for 22 years, this 52% ABV rum delights with notes of tar, vanilla, and oak. On the palate, expect intense tar and toasted flavors with hints of barrel and raisin, followed by a medium finish. User experiences highlight its softer contrast to typical Caroni robustness, describing it as relaxed and nuanced, though slightly diluted compared to stronger proof variants. This HTR-marked rum is a collector's piece, celebrated for its depth and character yet critiqued by some for understated flavors and value.

I'm Oliver – together with Jakob, Robert, and Lukas, we started RumX in 2018 as a small passion project in Stuttgart, back then under the name Rum Tasting Notes.
What began as a digital tasting diary is now the world's most comprehensive platform for rum fans: over 24,000 bottlings, 250,000+ independent reviews, and an active community with 46,000 members. We combine the collective intelligence of our community with an integrated marketplace, allowing you to shop securely and manage your collection directly from the app.
The goal? To offer you, the rum connoisseur, a place where you can choose with confidence—without paperwork, detours, or expert jargon.
Epic Velier Caroni Tasting 2023: With the two 1983 Caronis, it is noticeable that the dirty notes are not particularly present, instead rather light, i.e. LTR-typical sweet notes come to the fore. For me, the (alleged) Full Proof at 55% is a little ahead of the 52% High Proof thanks to a little more complexity and more concise tar and gum notes. Overall, the profile is almost like an LTR & HTR blend.
Relaxed Caroni. Tasty.
Epic Velier Caroni Tasting: Nose and palate rather weak, little flavor, but round. Rather short finish.
