How does this rum taste?
Don Q Single Barrel is a Puerto Rican rum from Destilería Serrallés, distilled in 2009 and aged for over a decade. Bottled at cask strength, it's noted for its bold profile, with aromas of vanilla, dried apricots, spice, and citrus. Tasting notes reveal a spicy, vanilla-rich, and sweet character, balanced with a well-integrated alcoholic presence. While some tasters find it slightly sharp, many appreciate its complexity and excellent value, especially for those new to premium rums. This premium rum offers a delightful exploration of Spanish-style light rums without additives or solera methods.

Times not high-level rum and still without additives... you can try. Did not know Don Q yet. Clearly a representative of the Spanish style.Nose: fruity-woody and as the first light cigar tobacco, wrapped in vanilla and toffee. The fruit goes in the direction of green apple with some lemon. Seems quite light overall, the alcohol stings a bit despite being only 49%. Fairly ok. 72Palate: spicy-woody and tobacco here as well. A bit spicy at first though and slightly salty-bitter, pepper with a hint of caraway. Overall a bit short and flat. 68Not bad, but not interesting enough either. The tobacco note, however, I find quite good.
Normally I don't like Don Q as such because they're too sweet, but this release is really nice. Cask strenght really adds to the overall profile. Fruity, sweet and spices mix very well with the light wood. Price to quality is very good and I may buy a few because it's a very good beginner rum as well.
Alcohol could be much better integrated, overall relatively inconsequential but also one of the few halfway decent Puerto Rico Rums.
The DON Q 2009 is an authentic light rum in Spanish style from a giant multicolumn still: without sugar, without additives and without solera hocus-pocus. Serrallés manages to tropically age a very light rum for a long time and yet not destroy the delicacy of the distillate. Of course, the wood is quite present, but in a light, sweet, vanilla way not tannic and heavy. The fact that the distillate remains present is also due to the increased alcohol content. This brings some spiciness, but provides sufficient backbone.
