Habitation Velier Mount Gay Last Ward
Complex dry vanilla, wood, and spice dominate here, with a herbal, slightly bitter edge some love and others find challenging. One to try if you’re drawn to dry, intense rums with evolving profiles.
Complex, dry, spicy—classic Mount Gay with herbal twist.

How does this rum taste?
- exceptionally complex, even after several tastings
- complex, not easy to grasp
- one of my Habitation Velier favorites
Mount Gay’s Last Ward 2009, bottled by Habitation Velier, opens with an intense nose of vanilla, woody spice, and hints of solvent and herbs—“a fantastic rum…very harmonic” (Peder Frits Nielsen). On the palate, it leans drier than classic Barbados, delivering oak, caramel, and a persistent herbal bitterness. Many note the alcohol is noticeable—sometimes “not integrated perfectly” (DomM)—but the complexity with layers of marzipan, dried fruits, and a touch of metallic or gluey notes makes it a compelling, if challenging, sipper. Expect a long, spicy-herbaceous finish, with the rum’s character shifting from sweet patisserie to dry, woody spice as you sip.

To Mount Gay
"Retasting this one on a regular basis and today I enjoy it again. A lovely rum from nose to finish. Got this one today and it is a wonderful rum well worth the price tag. Slightly dry in the finish but great overall from nose to finish."
"The nose is fruity and complex, but in the mouth I find it backward with an alcohol not very well integrated"
"Lots of wood, very spicy to peppery. Pleasant, not too sweet vanilla. Some banana, but not overripe and a few herbs. The alcohol remains a bit edgy, but not unpleasant. Liked."
"This has long been my favorite from Mount Gay. Compared to other representatives of the distillery, I like the slightly more pronounced caramel sweetness here, which makes for an overall more harmonious basic aroma. Accessible rum at a high quality level."
