Introducing the Last Ward, a Barbados rum produced at the Mount Gay distillery and meticulously selected and bottled by Habitation Velier. Distilled in 2009 from molasses using a Pot Still, this rum has been aged for 9 years and boasts an ABV of 59%. It is a limited release with only 4488 bottles available. Our rum community members thoroughly enjoyed this rum, describing it as intense and complex, showcasing a variety of aromas such as vanilla, woody, herbal and spicy notes. On the palate, they savored the oak, vanilla, woody, vegetal and spicy flavors. While some found the alcohol integration less than perfect, many agreed that a few drops of water can bring out its best qualities. “Retasting this one on a regular basis and today I enjoy it again. A lovely rum from nose to finish. Got this one today and it is a wonderful rum well worth the price tag. Slightly dry in the finish but great overall from nose to finish.”

“A powerful rum that develops beautiful notes of glue at first, then continues on spicy (chili) and woody notes before plunging to soft notes of marzipan and toffee and finishing towards a more fruity register. Still intense in the mouth, the rum keeps a slightly fruity profile, but mostly dominated by spicy and woody notes, with a hint of vegetal, toasted and leather aromas. The finish, quite long, reveals tannins and some bitterness brought by licorice, but retains the same spicy, woody and leather profile with a touch of herbs and caramel. An intense and dry rum that represents its distillery as it should.”

“Jour 22 du calendrier Samples de Luxe. Tabac et arômes végétaux, fruits tropicaux et bois vernis. Énormément d’arômes ici. En bouche c’est un peu plus terne, même si l’alcool est bien intégré et tout est équilibré. La finale est moyenne et les arômes de bois vernis reviennent en force. Un beau rhum à cheval entre la Jamaïque et son funky et les Demeraras sombres et profonds.”

“En comparaison avec le 2007, c'est le même mais sans les agrumes et le menthol au nez même si l'amertume du bois est bien présente. C'est beaucoup plus Barbade classique du coup. Je suis un peu déçu par la bouche que je trouve un peu mince, très écrasée par l'amertume du bois. Victoire du 2007 très claire pour moi.”

“Spannender Rum mit geiler Nase, aber schlecht integriertem Alkohol! Die Nase macht mir extrem Lust auf den Rum und kommt sehr vielschichtig daher. Neben Klebstoff habe ich hier in erster Linie Ananas und Marzipan, die nur etwas vom doch sehr präsenten und schon leicht stechenden Alkohol gedämpft werden. Am Gaumen deutlich holziger, adstringenter und mit einer leichten Kirschnote. Auch hier allerdings wieder der sehr präsente Alkohol, der den Genuss etwas hemmt. In Summe ein spannender Rum, die Nase mit etwas Vorsprung vor dem Gaumen und mit etwas besser integrierten Alkohol in meinen Augen durchaus ein Kandidat für mehr als 8.5 Punkte. So kratzt er für mich gerade so diese Marke.”
