Velier Caroni Old Legend Trinidad Rum

Caronis Velier 1985 tasting. A nose of caramel, rubber and tar with dark, sweet flavors, tropical fruit, baked banana and baked apple. The first sensation is a little acqueous and one senses dilution. But everything returns to normal fairly quickly as the mouth fills with slightly bitter aromas of bicycle tires, fruit and pastries. Elegant yet punchy. The finish is not so long (here too, the reduction makes itself felt) for a Caroni, but once again on elegance. Most of the aromas disappear fairly quickly, but the caramel and bicycle tire remain almost indefinitely. The empty glass is superb, further proof of the wrong side of the reduction. This rum was intended to be bottled at Caroni in bottles stamped "Legend 2000".

A true legend fully aged when the distillery was active. A surprsing rum with a sweet profile (coconut, pastries, molasses, caramel, vanilla). Despite a significant reduction, it is quite expressive. Very nice rum !

Un profil particulièrement étrange pour un Caroni. Le nez est discret, très doux et évoque la Barbade avec des notes de sucre brun, de vanille et d’épices, de pâtisseries, de noisette et de noix de coco. Cette douceur inhabituelle en est presque perturbante, sûrement en raison d’un degré relativement bas. L’attaque en bouche continue sur cette lancée très légère et fine. On ressent un côté sucré et pâtissier au palais, sur le sucre brun, le caramel au beurre, le miel, la mélasse mais aussi la noix de coco, le boisé qui se tourne vers le chocolat, le café, la noisette, mais aussi la vanille et la muscade pour les épices. Il y a une infime influence de notes pétrolifères en bouche, qui s’éteint aussi rapidement qu’elle vient. L’alcool est bien intégré, mais la douceur gâche un petit peu les traits du profil. La finale est relativement mince, rappelant toujours le Foursquare avec le caramel au beurre, la noix de coco, la noisette, la vanille, le chocolat et un boisé léger. Les épices, le sucre brun et les fruits confits finissent d’achever ce profil extrêmement doux de Trinidad, qui se veut aussi surprenant que déroutant. On peut saluer l’initiative, mais on peut ressentir une forme de frustration quant au résultat final.

Relaxed sipper with lots of vanilla and nut. A touch of acidity on the palate.

14.04.2012 First visit to the Whisky.dk event after returning to Denmark after first living 3 years in Upplands Väsby, Sweden and then 7 years in Shanghai, China. Got back together with old friends to have a nice weekend. Notes. Medium dark in colour. Nose: wood, light coconut, solvent, sweetbread. Palate: fresh, oily, wood, coconut, light, vanilla. Finish: medium to long, spice, wood, sweet.

Caroni 85 Crosstasting This is a really elegant Caroni that has a nose of an caramelized apple baked in a really old wood stove. Some Nut and fruit and rather young wood. On the palate there is a lot of wheel tubing, fruit and caramel. it finishes wih a touch of sweet white bread, could be longer and could be more pungent. Still a nice experience.
