I got this bottle yesterday and couldn't wait until the weekend with the tasting. This is a relatively light rum and I had expected a rum with more punch to it. The nose has bourbon on it with sweet caramel and heavy vanilla notes with a bit of coconut. The palate is dominated by caramel with a lot of spices and you can really taste the burnt molasses. The finish is long and has burnt oak and spices that linger for very long.

This Rum is a good example of American Rum, that seems to target the home market and thus has nuances of other prevailing spirits there, like bourbon. It is nice, but not exceptional... Reminds me of Bourbon as well as some Babados Rums.

Früchte sucht man hier eher vergebens.

I was given a sample of this rum. Made by Privateer, a company located in Massachusetts, for Velier. Double distilled with a Vendome still and then using a custom batch still. From imported molasses and no additives. Is a blend containing 3 to 4 years. On the nose: vanilla, caramel. On the palate: Sweet vanilla, and some chocolate. The ending is short. Has some Barbadian flare. It tastes quite good for sipping. Now my only beef is the price, around 100 dollars which I think is way too much. In that price range, you can get better rums like the ECS series from Foursquare to name one. I will comfortably pay around 45 dollars or so.

Not bad at all for such a young rum, it’s good, with intensity in the mouth and a start of complexity. Looking forward to tasting a more mature version…
