Got a sample of this in my second batch from Rum Ratings Tasting Club and participated in the virtual tasting yesterday. The Abuelo XV Oloroso is 15 years old and is first matured in American oak casks to be finished in Oloroso Sherry casks. Overall it’s very sweet, natural or not, read somewhere that a hydrometer test gave 44 gpl. The finish is medium long.
8:On the nose, we get some nice accents of prune and tobacco in addition to the more classic caramel and vanilla. After airing, more dried fruits come out, orange appears and some roasted notes as a bit ashy impression is felt. This rum is fresh and well balanced on the nose. 8,5:On the palate, the attack is soft and the sugar takes up a lot of space. However, freshness remains, which helps to avoid extreme sweetness. Orange, vanilla and rancio are the dominant aromas here. 8:The finish is fairly long. It is driven by notes of vanilla, followed quickly by tobacco and rancio.. Smoooooth....
Sehr starker olorosso Einfluss. Das eigendestillat kommt leider nicht stark durch. Die süße ist angenehm und nicht zu stark.
I like the cask finish though I would have loved a higher ABV. Fruity and sweet with an oily palate. I like the light smoky touch in the finish. Price to quality is very good in my mind.
