How does this rum taste?
The SMF Rum 2004 from the South Pacific distillery in Fiji is a distinct and limited-edition release, bottled by Excellence Rhum. Distilled from molasses and aged for 13 years, this rum boasts an intriguing aroma of vanilla, honey, and citrus notes. On the palate, its fruity and woody flavors mix with undertones of glue and honey. Users commend its fresh, light wood aromatics and hint of spice, yet note a shortfall in palate complexity compared to its promising scent. This rum is recognized for its well-integrated alcohol and unique character, though some find it lacks dynamic presence in taste and finish.

A puzzling rum. The nose is initially rather timid, showing signs of alcohol as well as light notes of cask, spice and caramel. Aeration brings out a buttery, funkier side, but also much more fruit, from citrus (lemon) to tropical fruits (pineapple, coconut). A round, mellow, almost creamy olfactory profile. While the profile has been interesting up to now, the palate takes a beating. The funkiness of the nose all but disappears (the glue note comes late), replaced by a sort of Foursquare bis, as alcoholic as it gets: coconut, caramel, toffee, cookie, sweet spices (vanilla, pepper), dried fruit and toasted notes are all present, creating a rather thunderous flatness on the palate. To top it all off, the alcohol is not well integrated, in fact it's one of the main flavors. A real setback after such a promising nose. The finish, quite long, offers little more appeal than the palate. A little spice, smoke and leather compete with the sweetness and the high alcohol content of the coconut. Clearly not the benchmark in the world of Fijian rums, nor for its bottler.
06.03.2020 Met up with some colleagues to give a tasting at this old iconic place. Notes. Light to medium dark colour. Nose Fresh, light wood, citrus, rubber, pineapple, mint, anise. Palate Medium intense, light wood, faint smoke, coconut, pineapple, light licorice, light mint. Finish Medium to long, medium dry, light wood, spice, light chocolate.
Mixture between Belize and Foursquare. From Fiji is missing here almost everything. But no matter the part is good😋 roasted chocolate notes, leather, coffee beans, dried fruit. Delicious
Unfortunately not as complex on the palate than the nose would suggest. But it handles being sweet rather well.
