How does this rum taste?
RumX members love the Madeira cask influence of this 5‑year Antigua rum, bringing ripe fruit, honeyed vanilla and gentle wood over a balanced 46% body. On the palate, caramel and chocolate meet oak, with a medium‑long, mild finish. While a few note bitterness or a winey edge, most find it enjoyable and well priced. Overall a very well balanced and full bodied rum from a great distillery. When I was in Antigua some years ago I was pleased with a guided tour at the distillery and their aging house guided by a fantastic guide who origins from Madeira and is related to the founders of the brand. She told me that Madeira Cask Finish is the one of the three cask finished they’re most pleased with in batch 001. I’ve tasted the batch 002 some years ago and rated it 8+. The nose is great with aromas of fruits, honey, vanilla, wood and Madeira. At the palate the aromas of fruits, vanilla and Madeira comes back but there also flavors of smoke, oak and chocolate.
Bitter and winey notes. Not mine at all
For the price you can not complain, solid rum.
Madeira finish unfortunately gone wrong, relatively bitter, vinous, spicy and woody. Too bad. The Port cask finish is definitely much better here!
