How does this rum taste?
- Sweetness with no bite
- Very heavy and complex taste
- Well suited for tiki drinks
Hamilton 86 Demerara River gets frequent nods for bold notes of Demerara sugar, tropical fruits (pineapple, banana), caramel, and some funk—"reminds me of mesquite wood and Texan barbecue" (Zach) and "oak barrel and a little Jamaican funk" (Mark Leggett). The palate leans roasted and woody, with a thread of tobacco and occasional flashes of spice or a slight metallic edge. Many RumX drinkers enjoy it both neat and mixed, with several noting its solid role in tiki drinks and side-by-side with El Dorado offerings.

"Love the 151 and this is my favorite Guyanese I’ve had. More versatile than its older brother."
"Reminds me of Appleton. Would think if a recipe calls for separate Demerara and another Jamaican rum to maybe skip this one."
"Demerara rum gets a lot of hype, but it really isn't very exciting. This rum is just fine. I can sip it neat, but I prefer something with more flavor. I only buy this for mixing at parties because of it's low price."
"Not bad; I kind of want it stronger, but I guess that's what the 151 is for."
