How does this rum taste?
Most enjoy its smooth sweetness, caramel-woody profile and beginner appeal. Critics find it thin, with a short finish and not much more depth than younger Malecon bottlings. Overall seen as a solid, easy sipper.
If you’re happy with gentle Zacapa/Botran-style rums and want something a bit drier and older-feeling, this fits well—just don’t expect huge power or depth.
Enthusiasts chasing high complexity, long finishes, high-ABV intensity or unsweetened rums; anyone who dislikes rounded, sweet and wood-driven Central American styles.

Tasted again today, with direct comparison to the younger brother, the Malecon Imperial 18 years. The younger tastes lighter, less complex. I the rum class!
Nice drop, very suitable for beginners. And not too much sweetness.
Very well-balanced rum. However, I don't notice any major differences to the younger vintages.
