How does this rum taste?
Most love it as a classic, accessible Hampden with tropical fruit, light funk and strong value. Critics find the oak dominant, esters too tame and batch 2 weaker than batch 1.
If you’re Hampden-curious, this is the safest starting point: it delivers clear tropical funk and oak structure without the aggression of the overproof or higher-mark releases.
Funk hunters chasing high-ester, cask-strength Hampdens, or drinkers who dislike dry, woody finishes and find Scotch-like oak notes off-putting.

I'm Oliver – together with Jakob, Robert, and Lukas, we started RumX in 2018 as a small passion project in Stuttgart, back then under the name Rum Tasting Notes.
What began as a digital tasting diary is now the world's most comprehensive platform for rum fans: over 25,000 bottlings, 270,000+ independent reviews, and an active community with 50,000 members. We combine the collective intelligence of our community with an integrated marketplace, allowing you to shop securely and manage your collection directly from the app.
The goal? To offer you, the rum connoisseur, a place where you can choose with confidence—without paperwork, detours, or expert jargon.

One of my favorite rums, and my reference for a straight 8.0. Good entry to unadulterated rums. After having lots of other samples I came back to this, and found it dryer than I remembered, also I now recognized the wood. I still like it but I detract some points to balance it against others I have tasted. Also, this is one of my first honest rums, guiding me to my journey, so it gets the honor of having the first RumX Picture taken ever. Oliver, you got me, finally!
Sanded ceder wood nose, hit of acetone on the first sip. A confused mix of leather, smoke, burnt toffee and tobacco. Every flavour appears to be fighting with each other. So so so happy I did not pay £70 for this.
Edit Edit: batch #1 is better than batch #2 Edit: it's also really good as a mixer. Simply a classic. Good price/performance ratio. Works wonderfully to enhance both cocktails and long drinks. For me, it's the best entry-level Hampden and always will be. That's why I had to upgrade it again.
I am surprised this was the 2022 rum of the year runner up (the whisky exchange). It was a confusing cluster for opposing flavours and smells. If that’s what you define as funky I guess it was. Not very pleasant, and at £70 a bottle is disappointing.
