An interesting opportunity to taste Varela rum in higher strength. And I must say, it is pretty solid one with flavour profile of sweet honey and dark forest fruits. The nose is predominantely dark with dried fruits, wood and clear port influence. There is also bit of spices, but it did not prepare me what is to come in the taste! The mouthfeel has medium density and it's full of forest berries! But like really full. I love it. There is also some honey and sweet spices. The only thing I am a bit upset about is the finish, which is quite short and not too dominant. Was it more pronounced, I'd rate this rum higher. But still I can say I really like this.
Odor: toasted / caramelized Tastes less toasted than the nose might suggest. A little spicy but round and caramelized to the taste. Good intensity. Average length on the palate. The alcohol is not too dominant, and you don't really feel that it's 57%. A pleasant surprise, a nice, accessible rum.
The woody flavors are quite noticeable, but are not dominant. There are spicy, fruity and also sweet hints which add extra character and depth. A pleasant and nice easy drinking rum 👍
