How does this rum taste?
Old Demerara Rum, distilled in Guyana’s Diamond distillery and bottled by Keeling & Son, presents a rich and traditional Demerara profile. Crafted from molasses with a 45% ABV, it reveals aromas of coffee, ester, and bitter orange, complemented by notes of chocolate, black pepper, and licorice on the palate. Users appreciate its complexity and balance, highlighting dried fruit and leather undertones. Despite its moderate alcohol strength, it still provides a medium-long finish featuring orange and licorice nuances. Users note the welcoming yet subtle character that lacks significant depth, but its classic Demerara style remains highly respected. Ideal for those seeking a vintage rum experience.

I'm Oliver – together with Jakob, Robert, and Lukas, we started RumX in 2018 as a small passion project in Stuttgart, back then under the name Rum Tasting Notes.
What began as a digital tasting diary is now the world's most comprehensive platform for rum fans: over 24,000 bottlings, 250,000+ independent reviews, and an active community with 47,000 members. We combine the collective intelligence of our community with an integrated marketplace, allowing you to shop securely and manage your collection directly from the app.
The goal? To offer you, the rum connoisseur, a place where you can choose with confidence—without paperwork, detours, or expert jargon.
When you are already an old man and are allowed to taste a rum that is even older ... Just opening the tarnished screw cap (!) was an adventure (and a feat of strength). A lovely grape scent hits you after opening, and this impression continues on the palate, albeit not quite as strong due to the ABV of only 45%, which was common at the time. But the alcohol is very well integrated and allows the rum to develop its full fruity aroma even after more than 60 years. This rum is like an essence. A dream from another world.
I am grateful for this sample of a 70s rum. Licorice and some cocoa on the nose, typical of the old Demeraras. In the mouth it has a nice balance and a lot of depth despite only 45%. I don't have anything to compare it to, but we are at a high level here. The flavors linger longer in the mouth. There is also no unpleasant wateriness as with other rums at a drinking strength of 45%. Great old Demerara
31.01.2020 Relaxing at a small tasting at a local dining place that is no more. Notes. Very dark in colour. Nose: Light yet complex, wood, caramel, dried fruit, orange, faint coffee. Palate: Complex, wood, roasted/light smoke, anise, dried fruit, light leather. Finish: Medium long, round, orange, wood, roasted, licorice.
Many thanks to zucker & zeste for the opportunity! A very exciting vintage rum with a surprising amount of body and complexity despite only 45%. I like it very much! Of course it could do with a few % more, but at the time it was bottled, 45% was already outside the norm... Really a nice drop!
