This rum surprised me. Picked it up in a liquor store in Tokyo back in fall 2024 out of curiosity of trying a Portuguese/Madeirense rum. On the nose it smelled of olive brine and very green, vegetal notes when first poured. I expected to find this one very off putting on the palate since I don’t like something to be too briny. Despite the nose, the palate ended up having a licorice/anise quality, with some sweetness, pepper, hay, spice and a hint of olive. There was salinity and some bitters. All in all, not too bad although I use it as a complementary mixer.
