How does this rum taste?
A bold 8-year Hampden, this LROK for Wu Dram Clan & Kirsch Whisky splits opinion on RumX. Bourbon and vanilla ride up front, with mild esters, spice, and a tropical fruit backbone peeking through after rest. While LukaŽiga finds the nose “bourbon notes and mild esters… green fruits like pear,” others like Johannes mention it’s “relatively sour, astringent, marzipan” for a Hampden. Martin Ekrt notes it’s “quite surprising” and almost “Clarendon-like with some herbs.” Not everyone was won over, but the round, spicy-salty finish with roasted wood and apricots caught many tasters’ attention.

By rum lovers, for rum lovers
I'm Oliver – together with Jakob, Robert, and Lukas, we started RumX in 2018 as a small passion project in Stuttgart, back then under the name Rum Tasting Notes.
What began as a digital tasting diary is now the world's most comprehensive platform for rum fans: over 24,000 bottlings, 250,000+ independent reviews, and an active community with 47,000 members. We combine the collective intelligence of our community with an integrated marketplace, allowing you to shop securely and manage your collection directly from the app.
The goal? To offer you, the rum connoisseur, a place where you can choose with confidence—without paperwork, detours, or expert jargon.
To be honest, this rum doesn't really blow me away. I notice a certain mustiness on the nose, which I find disturbing. I find the taste relatively sharp, as the alcohol is not really well integrated. How WDC and Kirsch were able to choose this remains a mystery to me.
8,3:On the nose, bourbon notes and mild esters, some solvents are the first thing we notice, green fruits like pear, floral and grassy notes, vanilla, all balanced. On aeration, unripe banana is out, citrus, herbaceous and vegetal tones with an olive, roasted wood with pastry, nuts, spicy. 7,9:On the palate, the attack is sweet/salty, very spicy, some chilli is there, woody tones, all a bit wild. The balancing act are tropical fruits like banana, esters and roasted wood notes like caramel and nuts. After resting the rum, very tasty fruits are stronger with mango, green fruits and some apricots, milk chocolate. 8,2:The finish is round with dry and spicy, salty wood, roasted with crunchy bread, caramel, a bit smoky, some hay and especially apricots..
Here I can go along with Serge, who rated the youngster very highly. He was also one of my favorites in the lineup and shows very well that young low ester Hampden can also work very well.
Not a bad rum, but relatively sour for a Hampden, astringent, marzipan. I clearly miss the fruity notes.
