How does this rum taste?
Planteray Mister Fogg Navy Rum is a unique blend crafted by Maison Ferrand from molasses, using pot and column stills, bottled at 55.7% ABV. User reviews describe it as having notable woody and caramel aromas, alongside tropical and dried fruit scents. The taste features prominent caramel and molasses notes, with dried fruits and a hint of black pepper. Responses vary, with some appreciating its historical concept and taste, while others find it overly sweet and lacking a true navy rum profile. Nods are given for its complexity and pleasant spice, yet critiques highlight an imbalance and sweeter finish unexpected in a Navy-style rum.

Edit: after standing a little in the open bottle of Split, I think it has degraded quite a bit. The artificial notes are now more apparent. Corrected downwards. Pure it is surprisingly better than expected. I thought I wouldn't like it at all. It's nothing special, but you can use it as a cheap rum in a Lumumba, I think it's well suited for that. The dosage doesn't dominate that much either.
Sweetish, medicinal and quite boring. Very pleasant, very slight bitterness. Quite cinnamony
Impressive navy-style rum from Planteray! Interestingly, from the taste and aroma, I would have guessed that the biggest portion of the blend is DDL. However, according to official information, the dominant component is WIRD. On the nose, woody notes dominate, accompanied by hints of dark dried fruit, banana peel and burnt caramel, which give it a robust, slightly roasted profile. The palate reveals an interesting mix of molasses, dried fruit, and wood, balanced with subtle black pepper and a faint touch of citrus. The finish is medium-long, carrying forward notes of woody oak, molasses, and a pleasant hint of honey, intertwined with lingering orange peel and banana. This rum is well-rounded yet still retains that bold navy strength. A solid 8.5/10 for me!
@BCB Berlin: Basically not a bad rum, but somehow I miss the balance here. Acidity, wood, sweetness, fruit and tannins come together here without really coming together. The 5g dosage is also absolutely unnecessary for such a product in my opinion. I'll have to take another look at it...
