Well I have to admit, this one has really surprised me! - From a micro distillery in Northern Ireland (in other words, proper small) - it’s at 65.7% ABV, any higher and Americans would call this a Hazmat drink and YET it drinks SO WELL!! Barely any burn or bite, just coating your mouth and throat with warmth and fruits that have been stewing in a pan when you’ve been making jam Very inviting nose, WAY too drinkable for the strength it’s at and packed full of flavour This one now however is a unicorn bottle because: - A) you had to be part of the Killowen Kult, which I seem to no longer be and can no longer find it on Facebook, boo! B) that one batch sold out almost instantly, like the majority of their stuff to the Kult If you see this at auction at all, I’d seriously recommend bidding for it as it’s really enjoyable. Not only that every now and again Killowen release their own Solera Dark Rum in annual batches I’ll be keeping an eye out for this one - such an impressive rum from such a small distillery. Northern Ireland’s David to the rum industry’s Goliath 8/10
It’s unusual and overall a big bruiser of a rum. The nose brings sweet layers, gingerbread, blackberry as expected and an overall sweet hit, you aren’t quite sure if it is rum or a liqueur. The mouth is a departure, I get hit with a wave of soap and blackberry alongside some more subtle notes, spice and clove with some more molasses. The finish is short but present in the lips, with metallic undertones, real deep grapefruit and also more soapy elements. It’s unusual but try as I might I am a long way for enjoying it!
