This is really a great gay mount!
According to Dr. Frank Ward the Velier bottlings of Mount Gay have been overaged and have subsequently lost part of their classic aromas. As pure pot still MG is supposedly best at 4-5 years of age, let’s see how this fares. Mild and mineralic on the nose with fresh rain and river rocks. A little flat to my liking, admittedly. However continuously agitating the liquid does work some magic in releasing an unexpectedly vibrant profile. It’s heavily camphorous, leathery and dusted with winter spices. First balsamic vinegar. Then a hint of oregano that perpetuates all the way to the finish. Followed by hard glue stick, pineapple husks and cedar wood chips. A very stale profile broken by light caramelisation, dried apricots and fresh orange peel. On the palate the liquid leans further into the dried fruits, accompanied by more pineapple husks and orange zest. It’s sweet, woody, malty and everything you would expect at this point. Camphor still prominently in the driver’s seat with musty, earthy and cooling notes. There’s pinetrees, potting soil, oregano and lots and lots of mint. The taste of herbs and mint lingers, leaving me urging for another pour; and scratching my head pondering why tasters laud ‘01-‘03 TDLs, but raise their eyebrows at this. I’m sorry, Dr. Ward. I really like this.
Very good! Characterized by many tropical (sour) fruits and citrus fruits, herbs, spices, chocolate and honey. Exciting profile and tasty base, made more complex by the bourbon cask, but still lacking the desirable refinement and roundness.
Una versione dove emerge molto la parte alcolica. Belle sensazioni di mentolo sia al naso che in bocca. Forse un po’ troppo monodimensionale.
