How does this rum taste?
Most drinkers call this an iconic, world‑class Caroni with brutal power, huge tar‑rubber notes and an endless finish. A few find it slightly less complex or pretty rough without patience.
If you already enjoy big Caroni like the 1996 Velier releases and want the profile pushed to its elegant extreme, this HTR 1974 is the “nuclear yet refined” version everyone talks about.
Beginners, those sensitive to high ABV, or drinkers who prefer light, clean or sweet rums without heavy petrochemical and woody notes – and anyone wary of very expensive bottles.

By rum lovers, for rum lovers
I'm Oliver – together with Jakob, Robert, and Lukas, we started RumX in 2018 as a small passion project in Stuttgart, back then under the name Rum Tasting Notes.
What began as a digital tasting diary is now the world's most comprehensive platform for rum fans: over 24,000 bottlings, 270,000+ independent reviews, and an active community with 50,000 members. We combine the collective intelligence of our community with an integrated marketplace, allowing you to shop securely and manage your collection directly from the app.
The goal? To offer you, the rum connoisseur, a place where you can choose with confidence—without paperwork, detours, or expert jargon.

Brachial part....
This one is heavy and I took down a note on it besides the fact that I loved the tannins in the finish and the Caroni flavours. I should have bought a few extra bottles when release because the cost has increased more than tenfold.
I will have to try it again at my leisure, but at our tasting I found it simply outstanding. A really rarely elegant Caroni, which for me is a mixture of LTR and HTR, especially on the nose. In the mouth, the rum goes down like oil, I have rarely found a Caroni to be so smooth and delicious without it being able to hide which distillery it comes from. I'm going to have to rethink my prey scheme...... Thank you very much for this opportunity, he knows who is meant :)
A rum tasted in Paris, late in the evening, then, more seriously, in Cologne. A full Caroni nose, but without excess. Dried herbs, tarragon, machine fat, butter and the rubber of masks and flippers, reminiscent of family vacations by the sea. A fabulous nose that makes you want to stay for ever, without even tasting it. The first palate gives a sensation of freshness, young wood and even fleeting candy. Then it evolves into a more classic Caroni with a mechanical workshop feel dominated by machine grease. Then the floral, vegetal and almost floral side returns in full force. Exceptional evolution on the palate! A long, elegant finish rounds off this incredible experience. The empty glass exhales mint and dried herbs to complement the mechanical workshop.
