Very round and tasty Cuba single cask and finally something in cask strength! Most likely sancti Spiritus! Great bottling and totally under the radar! For me one of the best older Cuba cask strength bottlings to date...
Auto-translatedIf you imagine a very classic full powered Spanish styled rum. No sugar. You'll get this. Nothing surprising but still very well made..so yeah classic. Vanilla. Caramel. US oak. Coffee. Toffee. Thick. Warm. Dram Mor is a great small Scottish bottler. Seems they really have an eye for good single cask rums.
For me this was significantly better than Havana Seleccion de meastros which is my main reference point for Cuban rums. On the nose it has what you might expect a simple sweet caramel and woody profile. On the palate I got a strong plum/ orchard fruits note alongside caramel. It isn’t complex but it is very tasty and undemanding. Tasted as part of a UK Rum Club Dram Mor tasting hosted by the excellent Kenny McDonald of Dram Mor.
The nose has lots of oak with notes of malted barley, dark chocolate and black coffee. Something floral in the background too. The palate has a big, smoky and sweet tobacco notes. There's also hazelnuts and a pinch of saltiness. The finish is medium in length with a pleasant dark chocolate and maple vibe to it. A little smokiness remains. Easily the best Cuban I've reviewed so far. But it's not a style I tend to gravitate towards. Easy to drink with an enjoyable taste.
