Master of Malt Caroni Traditional Column Rum HTR 1997
Highly praised as a balanced, straightforward 1997 Caroni with well‑integrated high ABV, long finish and classic dirty‑woody profile, even if complexity and fruit intensity are a bit restrained.
Fans of drier, dirty-woody Caroni who enjoy leather, tar and cedar notes at near cask strength and want a solid 1997 with good price-to-quality.

A nose of yellow fruit and mirabelle plum with a tire/rubber background. Spices and cedar wood (cigar box). The palate is surprisingly smooth, again marked by fruit, dried fruit and still yellow fruit and mirabelle plum. A touch of leather and still bicycle tire/rubber. Quite a lot of wood too, but on the cedar side and not really overpowering. The finish is long and balanced between fruit and rubber. Fruit is also very present here. A well-balanced, rather fruity rum with little mechanical workshop for a 1997 Caroni. Definitely a good, balanced rum, despite its very attractive selling price. However, I have the impression of dilution (despite the ABV of almost 61%), which makes it a little thin.
Good representation of the 97 profile. Well balanced and enjoyable focusing on woody and dirty notes rather than fruits. While the alcohol is very well integrated, complexity could be a bit more intriguing. So it sits compfortably in the middle of the 97 vintage for me.
I ordered the bottle as a Black Friday deal from Master of Malt. I was rather skeptical, but at that price I had to try it. I was pleasantly surprised. A lot of dark and tart tones emerge from the glass. Mostly wood & spice though. Fruits are present, but only really perceptible after a longer standing time. Typical Caroni DNA is present. I would have liked more fruit for a higher score.
Good Caroni, perhaps lacking a little complexity. Interesting bourbon and whisky notes.
