How does this rum taste?
Most drinkers are blown away by its complexity, balance and monumental finish. Critics mention strong wood, bitterness and low fruit. Consensus: a world‑class, very dry old Demerara benchmark.
If you love old Velier Demeraras or dry, woody PMs, this takes everything up a notch in intensity and length—just don’t expect much sweetness or bright fruit.
Beginners, sweet‑tooth drinkers, or anyone who dislikes bitterness, heavy oak or high‑ABV, low‑fruit rums—and people who don’t want to spend serious money on a rare bottle.

Yet another old tasting of a great release. The price of this bottle has since gone through the roof and it has become a rare collectors item. The nose hits you right in the face with wood, leather, licorice, anise, dried fruit and earthy notes as well as a very light roasted note. The palate is dry, very complex and well balanced with dried fruit, roasted oak, licorice and anise. The finish is extremely long and some of the flavours stick to your palate for a very long time. Dry finish with oak, licorice and some raisins.
Truly a great PM from velier so much intense nose with the bitterness and prunes I love, the taste also bitter but it does so much more the sweetness in the back and complex palate just round this amazing old rum off with a touch of perfection I love this old pm stuff
Worth a high rating for sure, the best PM I have tried so far, it’s like a history book to tell you what PM tastes should be like before Guyana government decided to combine rums industry. Glad the PM is still keeping quite similar style over such a long time, but this 1974 still one of the best and shows the great sticky mochi, dark chocolates and toffee combinations, superb rum indeed
Dark espresso, overripe plums, wet wood and bitters. Absolute dream material. If you happen to have been born in the same year that this rum was distilled, you'll feel even more when you have it in your glass. I like 1974.
