How does this rum taste?
- Complex medicinal notes
- Long, engaging finish
- Limited edition rarity
The Paradise #3 (Guyana Stock), distilled at Trinidad’s Caroni distillery and independently bottled by Velier, is a limited-release rum from 1994, aged 26 years at cask strength with a 52.8% ABV. This rare rum boasts a complex profile, exhibiting medicinal, tar, and oak notes, followed by hints of roasted spices. Tasting reveals intense tar and oak with a touch of vanilla, but opinions suggest it's overly dry from extended aging. Fruity undertones include cantaloupe and prunes, yet the fruit presence is occasionally subdued by dominant woody and tarry elements. A medicinal, long finish and subtle sweetness enhance its appeal, though some might find it lacks vibrancy compared to standout Caronis.

"Epic Velier Caroni Tasting 2023 / Whisky Live 2023: Brings the heaviness and complexity typical of the 1994 profile of the Heavy Trinidad style, the long maturation is recognizable. Overall, in my opinion, already a little above the peak, moreover, a few percent are missing here to let the 94 profile shine in all its glory - therefore, the release in my eyes can not quite keep up with the absolute top representatives of the vintage. But what does that mean with tropically aged Caronis - we are still on the highest level."

"A Caroni that clearly relies on exclusivity and rarity to set itself apart. Unfortunately, it's not in the aromas that it stands out, as the profile is relatively classic for a Caroni: rubber, tar, menthol, smoked oak, spices and caramel form the bulk of the olfactory framework. Fruit appears briefly. Not a bad profile, but one might have expected more depth. On the palate, the rum is very focused on empyreumatic and woody notes: the oak cask, powerful smoky notes, spices (licorice in particular), caramel and dried fruit give a fairly round, dry profile, which is complemented by the petroleum and mechanical side. While the whole is coherent, with well-integrated alcohol, one might hope for a little more vivacity from a rum of this caliber. The finish is very long, medicinal, tarry and mentholated, with woody, spicy and empyreumatic aromas. The fruit struggles to make itself felt. It lacks the depth to make it an exceptional rum. The intrinsic quality is there, but in terms of positioning, it's not the best Caroni, a little below par in terms of aromas and rather classic in flavors, and for an unfortunately indecent price."
