How does this rum taste?
The Select Reserve French Cask Rum from MHOBA distillery in South Africa is a bold, limited-edition spirit with only 492 bottles available. Distilled from sugar cane juice and aged for one year, this rum showcases strong fruity notes, woody undertones, and high ester content. Users note its complexity, with a distinctive mix of alcohol and solvent aromas. At cask strength 65% ABV, it offers a potent nose and palate, embraced for its intense and tropical profile with hints of sweetness. While its high proof is well-integrated, some find its youthful sharpness overwhelming.

I'm Oliver – together with Jakob, Robert, and Lukas, we started RumX in 2018 as a small passion project in Stuttgart, back then under the name Rum Tasting Notes.
What began as a digital tasting diary is now the world's most comprehensive platform for rum fans: over 24,000 bottlings, 250,000+ independent reviews, and an active community with 46,000 members. We combine the collective intelligence of our community with an integrated marketplace, allowing you to shop securely and manage your collection directly from the app.
The goal? To offer you, the rum connoisseur, a place where you can choose with confidence—without paperwork, detours, or expert jargon.
Typical solid Mhoba, but on the palate just too young and impetuous and a little too spicy for me. Does a one-year-old rum, even if it is wonderfully designed and comes from a single cask, really have to cost more than EUR 100 these days? 🙄
Amazingly complex. You can taste tropical influences and a finish. I like it very much!
So, as I already wrote on the WR10, I'm not that experienced with Mhoba yet and it doesn't seem to be my cup of tea. It's sometimes too tiring for me. Lots of esters and solvents, which is great of course, but it's quite complex. Slight sweetness, some wood with a fruit basket. I found the cherry bottling better in direct comparison.
No. 5: Yes, this rum is not bad. Quite woody on the nose and also very strong. The woody taste continues on the palate. I also find that it tastes slightly fruity. Overall score 8.4 :)
