A visit to the Takamaka distillery is worthwhile! During the pandemic, the distillery has built up a second mainstay alongside its high-quality pot still made from fresh sugar cane juice from the Seychelles in very small quantities with a triple column still that works with molasses from abroad (Mauritius). This enables continuous production in large quantities, serving the cocktail and beginner segment. The triple distillation process produces a very neutral rum, which is then infused with flavors (e.g. fruit essences, cinnamon, vanilla, sometimes also with coloring and sugar). This rum stands out in this segment as it is aged in a special process using wood fibers from a bourbon barrel.
Surprising intensity on the nose given the low ABV and (presumed) young age. Quite some wood with caramel and vanilla with (dried) apricots. Pretty good. On the palate also more interesting than some contenders in the category. Has enough character to add to a nicely crafted drink. Caramel, some wood and citrus fruits.
