How does this rum taste?
- Vibrant vegetal notes
- Unique floral character
- Limited edition rarity
The Chalong Bay Distillery's "Collection Antipodes" from Thailand is a limited release rum distilled from sugar cane juice using a column still in 2020. Bottled at cask strength with an ABV of 62.1%, this rum delivers a vibrant array of vegetal, sugarcane, and honey notes, complemented by citrus undertones. Aged for 2 years and 8 months, its aroma and palate intrigue with hints reminiscent of tropical fruits, spices, and herbal touches, but its intense alcoholic presence divides opinion. This distillation, while exhibiting youthful exuberance and potential, hints at further development with extended maturation. With only 558 bottles available, this limited-edition rum offers a unique profile that engages adventurous palates.

"Edit: Tried again in TiPunch, therefore corrected upwards a little. All in all, a rum that you can drink. For me, better than expected. Although this type of rum doesn't really appeal to me straight. Nice to have tried, but the rest will end up in a TiPunch as a mixer, as I don't think the alcohol integration is all that successful."

"Ich mag Chalong Bay irgendwie. Vor Jahren im Urlaub den ersten Rum unter dem Namen entdeckt und seitdem mit Interesse die Entwicklung weiterverfolgt. Nette Jungs, tolles Projekt (z.B. mit der mobilen Zuckersaftpresse um bei den Kleinbauern direkt auf dem Feld das Zuckerrohr zu pressen). Sehr eigenes florales Profil. Nicht die höchste Liga, aber lecker, pur und als Mix-Rum."

"Very greenhouse/vegetal agricole in the nose. Musty. Tequila/mezcal can be this way too. No smoke though. Some smoke in taste though. A weird musty sweetness. Chamomille tea. Unripe banana (why is unripe not a suggested note?). Reminds me of grogue too. It's not bad but a tad one-dimensional. If you can't stand the greenish notes this is noooot for you. Might make an excellent cocktail."

"17.10.2022 Going through samples at home. Notes Very light in colour. Nose Light vegetal, light varnish, sugarcane, mango, orveripe, light olive, berries, faint mint. Palate Medium dry, ligh mint, faint coconut, light salty, light pear, intense, naturally sweet, vanilla, sugarcane. Finish Medium long, intense, medium dry, fruits, sugarcane, vanilla. Extra note. Needs to rest in order to release all its flavours."
