How does this rum taste?
The Rare Cask Series HLCF rum from Hampden distillery is a luxuriously mature Jamaican release, bottled by Velier. Distilled in 2010 and aged for 12 years, it offers a blend of tropical fruit and vanilla aromas, with balanced, oily notes on the palate. Its exceptional integration of alcohol and sophisticated wood influence appeal to connoisseurs. However, limited availability (231 bottles) and a high price point may deter some buyers, despite its refined profile and well-balanced ester content. This rum's complexity and smoothness are highlighted by hints of pineapple, marzipan, and light floral notes, making it a unique choice for collectors or enthusiasts seeking an exquisite pot still rum experience.

By rum lovers, for rum lovers
I'm Oliver – together with Jakob, Robert, and Lukas, we started RumX in 2018 as a small passion project in Stuttgart, back then under the name Rum Tasting Notes.
What began as a digital tasting diary is now the world's most comprehensive platform for rum fans: over 24,000 bottlings, 250,000+ independent reviews, and an active community with 46,000 members. We combine the collective intelligence of our community with an integrated marketplace, allowing you to shop securely and manage your collection directly from the app.
The goal? To offer you, the rum connoisseur, a place where you can choose with confidence—without paperwork, detours, or expert jargon.
Interesting color! Clearly darker also than older (continental matured) bottlings. The nose is also surprising: I find much more sweetness associated with tropical fruits (banana!) Than sonnst at Hampden. In addition, a floral note comes to it, no disturbing alcohol, decidedly balanced. All together results in an intense but not brute, versatile Hampdennase - I really like! Palate: wow, lots of sweetness again, almost immediate salivation, and very pleasant barrel notes. Hard to believe this rum wasn't aged in a sweet wine barrel! Almost perfect impression and superbly integrated alcohol. The aftertaste leaves a little compared to the very high level of nose and palate is still long and intense and again the attribute "balanced" fits 100%. Yes, this is well over 90 points for me! The price charged is unfortunately unacceptably high.
A well rounded and balanced release with wonderful balance between floral and herbal notes. Oily on the palate with a very long finish. The empty glass is also wonderful and floral with some chocolate and dried fruit.
HLCF 2010 HV vs. Rare Cask: HV is more vibrant and intense, while the RC clearly shows the longer maturation. The RC comes with more sweetness on the nose and more wood influence on the palate, As this also somewhat tames the funkiness, on the first go the HV is slightly ahead in my book. Second go: Rare cask on its own with some additional time in the glas. Above holds true. Still a small upgrade. Leaving the price out of the equation, this is good (also for drinking 😉)
First nose Fruity and some glue....all very restrained and flat.overripe mango, papaya some banana and pineapple. On the palate again see restrained everything there what you expect from a HD HLCF but everything somehow very flat and nothing special. In the mouth fruity but also some wood and slight bitterness. Finish rather short to medium .... for the called price just not good enough (for me)
