How does this rum taste?
The Extra Añejo 11 Años from Santiago de Cuba is a Cuban rum distilled from molasses and aged for 11 years, offering a 40% ABV. Notable aromas include tropical fruit, coconut, and vanilla. On the palate, honey and vanilla are prominent, complemented by coconut and tropical fruit. Mixed reviews highlight its excellent cocktail potential, although some users find it too sweet or lacking complexity. Compared to traditional Cuban rums, it possesses a unique character influenced by aguardiente. Not ideally suited for sipping neat, it's valued for its Spanish style qualities. While the finish is relatively short, it showcases enough balance to be a worthy choice for cocktails.

This rum is not mine, simply too sweet. This sweetness is also on the nose, as well as vanilla and chocolate for me. For me, it continues on the palate and the chocolate becomes milk chocolate. But simply too sweet.
Enjoyable Cuban that is very different from the aged Havana Club expressions that have been my main Cuban experiences so far. This clearly has a much higher content of aguardiente, the aromatic cane eau-de-vie that has proud traditions in Cuba and is making a bit of a comeback. For that reason this rum is far more reminiscent of the recent Eminente cuban rum although definitely not as extreme as the 70% aguardiente that was in that one. It’s agreeable and quite dry, dissipation from the palate is a little quick but not quite as bad as most low-medium priced venezuelans. Can’t wait to put it to use in some cocktails and see how it does. At 40€ a pretty decent purchase when in the market for a Spanish style rum.
A very good Spanish style rum. One of my favorites.
I get sort of a wine feeling all the way from sniffing it, tasting it, to the finish. Nice, a little spice and fruit. Backside is the low ABV, would probably take off with 48+ %. Ok value for that money, 31 € 😎
