Silver Seal Demerara Rum Wildlife Series No. 1 1974

Un rhum très fonçé d’aspect. Un nez avec un alcool très bien intégré, avec du boisé et du fumé, du Porto, des agrumes. Un nez à la fois monolithique et complexe. Une bouche avec des tannins, très boisée, très fumée, amère avec du végétal qui amène de la fraîcheur. Un net goût de réglisse (bois doux). En finale toujours des agrumes, beaucoup de fumée et de la réglisse. Regoûté et réellement un rhum hors du commun. Cette amertume et ce boisé me font penser au Caroni Velier 1994 Guyana Stock. Le verre vide est magnifique avec des parfums de vieille maison en bois patinée et encaustiquée. Merci Dr Django pour le sample.

A wonderful rum and I'm happy to have a backup bottle on my shelf. Wonderfully balanced and full bodied, if you get the chance give it a go.

Amazing nose with a perfect balance between round and bitter notes. Unfortunately, palate is way more bitterish and feels a bit unbalanced. A pitty for such legendary rum. Not a bad one though and I'm still very happy I tasted such legend.

A very special drop. For the first 15 minutes, the glass smelled totally of beef fillet in cream sauce and notes of sumac. The rum (logically) needed time to open up. The smell of dairy products remained. But tobacco, vanilla, dark chocolate and cask were added, paired with a heavy sweetness. On the palate, vanilla, plastic, burnt, peat, earthy sweetness, mocha, leather, smoke. It reminds me of those little sugar Easter eggs. Finish: sweet, tobacco, plastic, green, spice, dried fruit, bitter Special profile. It tastes old and good. But I don't think it's quite top league.

Would be apart from the smoke note probably a rather decent representative of the 70s Demeraras from long continental storage. Unfortunately, the smoke note is so dominant that it must inevitably divide the minds. For me, clearly too present and more interesting as an experiment than for enjoyment.

The 65% Version is more fruity and less woody as the 68,5% Release. Both are very nice but I have the 65% slightly ahead.

Mom packs the leather whip. Do you know the smell of fresh charcoal? It's very close here. You are introduced to an earthy, peaty whisky finish via leather, charcoal and mocha, which surprisingly produces a palate orgasm.

Phew, it tastes pretty smoky. It must have been in a whisky barrel. I'm not really into that.

Der Rauch ist sehr intensiv, dazu kommt eine sehr erdige Note, die mir persönlich zu dominant ist. Insgesamt wirkt der Rum dadurch schwer zugänglich. Die meisten Bewertungen sehen das anders, ich kann dem nicht zustimmen. Für Liebhaber sehr rauchiger, erdiger Rums (oder Whiskeys) vielleicht interessant, mir fehlt hier die Ausgewogenheit.

Extraordinary rum. The vintage, the age, the price... Nose: incredibly concentrated, dense and complex. Like smelling the bowl of an old pipe. Pipe tobacco and cigar but with fine vanilla, light caramel and some chocolate aromas. Malty, smoky, roasty and with a hint of wood acidity. Dried plum behind it. Palate: extremely concentrated and thick. Tobacco and cigar are also prominent on the palate. Very dark, smoky and roasty. Mocha and dark chocolate. Some treacle and wood acidity. Hardly any fruit, but it is dark and dried. Thank you for letting me try this

A 74 PM that clearly stands out from its peers with its unique notes of damp tobacco, leather and charred wood. A love it or hate it rum - a masterpiece for me. Of course, the typical aromas of this vintage such as prunes, burnt demerara sugar, molasses and a good portion of spices are also clearly present.

A dream come true for me as an Islay fanatic

wow. this is really borderline, blindly I would have immediately guessed a smoky scotch like bowmore or talisker... for me personally much too intense after peat, tar, cigar smoke, burnt wood and old leather... plus dark molasses notes and demerara sugar in the finish, the typical spiciness and extremely bitter and astringent... with a few drops of water it becomes a little rounder and more vanilla...if it weren't for this Islay whisky-like note, my rating would be higher, but for me it's just over the top and overall just too dominantly smoky, sorry.
