How does this rum taste?
The Wild Series Rum Jamaica No. 23 from the Hampden distillery offers a unique sensory experience. Bottled by Romdeluxe, this limited edition rum boasts an intense profile with strong esters and overripe tropical fruit notes. Although its 86% ABV suggests a potent kick, users find the alcohol well-integrated, letting funky elements and smoky undertones shine. The rum's dynamic character divides opinions; some appreciate its powerful flavor explosion, while others feel it needs more aging to harmonize robust esters and smokiness. Its striking aroma reveals hints of glue and solvents, adding complexity to the profile. A great choice for enthusiasts who enjoy bold, unfiltered expressions.

Day 4 of RumX rarities. Funk and overripe tropical fruit with a slight smokiness on the nose. Alcohol a little pungent on first taste, flavors struggling to emerge. The smoke is more pronounced than on the nose. The finish is very nice, long and fruity, elegant despite the high alcohol content. I had bet on a super aged Hampden and this is a very young rum. On the other hand, the alcohol is impressively integrated, because if you smelled a high ABV, it's impossible to imagine 86%! I love this rum for its long, elegant and powerful finish. The empty glass is a splendor.
A rum of the extreme, as Hampden knows how to make them. The nose kicks off with a discharge of esters, solvents and glue that neutralizes the nostrils, before releasing some very ripe but hard to distinguish exotic fruit scents. A smoky touch emerges after aeration (from the cask?), followed by banana, pineapple and mango. This is clearly a profile that's no laughing matter. The first thing that strikes you on the palate is the power of the funk and the fruit. Exotic fruits, red fruits (strawberry) with a hint of harlequin candy and phenolic notes are very present. Leather and smoke add to the tannins and a touch of vinegar, giving the profile an astringent edge. However, another noteworthy fact is that at no point could such a high alcohol content have been detected in the glass: the 86% is incredibly well integrated into the whole. The finish is extremely long, the whisky cask making an impact with a peaty, smoky edge that's on a par with the funky, astringent notes. Tropical fruits add a touch of "heavy sweetness" on the finish. A bluff rum, punchy and extravagant.
29.10.2022 whisky & Rum Festival, nice event with a few friends and a few of our own bottles. This was a beast until it had rested for a good while. Very fruity and intense with a nice smoky note throughout the profile. Very long and warm finish.
Phew, that's some strong stuff. In view of the framework data, a lot was to be expected, but the intense smoky note is still surprising - and unfortunately in a negative sense. For me, it's not very enjoyable, even if I like extremes; the dominant smokiness in combination with the raw fruit esters and the provocatively high alcohol content is clearly too much for true drinking pleasure. However, those who like unfiltered numbers may find their way here. Unfortunately, I'm out.
