Velier Appleton Hearts Collection - 1984
Highly praised for its insane, complex nose and intense “liquid oak” profile. A unique piece of rum history that many love to taste, though some find the palate too woody and bitter.
Seasoned enthusiasts who enjoy extremely old, dry, tannic rums and want to experience a historic Appleton with a huge, evolving nose of polish, coffee, leather and dried fruits.

How does this rum taste?
Legendary nose, punishing oak bomb
If you love very old, wood‑driven Demeraras or the drier Hearts releases, this is a fascinating “liquid oak” experience—but it’s demanding and best for serious oak fans only.
Beginners, those sensitive to 63% ABV, or anyone who dislikes heavy oak, bitterness and low‑fruit profiles, or expects soft sweetness for the high price.

I'm Oliver – together with Jakob, Robert, and Lukas, we started RumX in 2018 as a small passion project in Stuttgart, back then under the name Rum Tasting Notes.
What began as a digital tasting diary is now the world's most comprehensive platform for rum fans: over 25,000 bottlings, 270,000+ independent reviews, and an active community with 50,000 members. We combine the collective intelligence of our community with an integrated marketplace, allowing you to shop securely and manage your collection directly from the app.
The goal? To offer you, the rum connoisseur, a place where you can choose with confidence—without paperwork, detours, or expert jargon.

The wood is very present from the beginning to the end, we start in the undergrowth. The fruits are more shy. The whole has a lot of power and length. Exceptional.
Absolutely inedible!
I love this oak forest. There are other unicorns besides the 1986 WIRD. You walk in a very old oak forest, fresh resin on the nose (the couch potato could also say glue), some orange keeps in the background, humus-rich forest floor on which grows damp moss. The taste continues with a pleasant bitterness for wood lovers, dried fruits keep in the background. Too much fruit here would also destroy the flair of the forest. With time in the glass, leather and vanilla come through more strongly. The finish is extremely long lasting, complemented by tobacco. Disappointed here who expects a maximum of complexity which is simply not very pronounced.
