It’s always fun to revisit some rums from a different point in one‘s rum journey. At some point this was very much the best rum I ever had (tasting it in Sloppy Joe‘s in the heart of Havanna might have contributed to its legendary status, though…). So coming back to it quite a few years down the road: I have to say this is still pretty good. While the low ABV is a shame and clearly impacting the intensity on the nose, the palate delivers quite some intensity with a nice balance of wood and dried fruits alongside vanilla and dark chocolate. Very much not bad in terms of complexity either. While it does not make my TOP 10 list anymore, this is still very tastes and enjoyable despite its low ABV. Honestly I like this bottling better than the very old Cuban single cask which have been released by various independent bottlers in the last couple of months (at least for those I tried so far). More complexity and better balance of wood and other notes of the profile.
80 points. Very nice with a cigar, lots of caramel. A little on the light side and to be avoided if you’ve had a full proof rum before.
This is definitely a top shelf rum and it has no added sugar. Matured for at least 25 years so a very old rum.
Typical Cuban, Good but too expensive!
