Details about this rum
By rum lovers, for rum lovers
I'm Oliver – together with Jakob, Robert, and Lukas, we started RumX in 2018 as a small passion project in Stuttgart, back then under the name Rum Tasting Notes.
What began as a digital tasting diary is now the world's most comprehensive platform for rum fans: over 24,000 bottlings, 250,000+ independent reviews, and an active community with 46,000 members. We combine the collective intelligence of our community with an integrated marketplace, allowing you to shop securely and manage your collection directly from the app.
The goal? To offer you, the rum connoisseur, a place where you can choose with confidence—without paperwork, detours, or expert jargon.
'Jürgen, why don't we make a private label clone of that Cinecane of those Lion's Den boys from the Schmeckerei? Jürgen (or whatever the name of the person responsible is) thought the idea was great. The Aldi customers didn't, apparently. A niche product and a clone, oh dear. But Pabst and Richarz can do it with the cheap but good rums, as you can see from the 'Paul & Virginie' range. In contrast to the original, the alcohol jumps out at you from the nose. And the flat, thin, artificial popcorn aroma. Nothing buttery, but artificially burnt. The aroma on the palate also lacks any volume and only a hint of the popcorn remains. Instead, there is an initial sweetness that masks everything, which is immediately overtaken by sharp alcohol. After that, exactly nothing happens except the fading of both. Gives the impression of a cheap liqueur with too many percentages. Which also explains why I found it for less than 5 guilders on the bargain table. Not even the few people who bought it picked up a second bottle. A cheeky total failure, but certainly fun to bake with.
