How does this rum taste?
- Sehr gut für einen 5 y/o
- Alkohol ist wunderbar integriert
- viel Charakter und Tiefe trotz Jugend
The Elliott Erwitt HLCF by Hampden and Velier quickly draws you in with classic high-ester notes, especially pineapple and candied tropical fruits, often joined by ripe pear and banana. Smoky and savory touches, described as "rauchig, Mirabellen, Birne, kandierte Früchte und Salzlake" (mto75), add to its multilayered profile. Many RumX tasters were struck by how well the alcohol is integrated, given its youth, with comments like “Er wirkt älter als die 5 Jahre” (Tschusikowsky) recurring. Despite its 5 years, most agree it punches above its age, though some noted the price and collectibility pull it more toward the shelf than the table.

To Hampden
"Very tasty! Great nose, in the first moment when you take a sip it has briefly a somehow unpleasant mouthfeel. However, this fades very quickly, then spreads a great flavor palette in the mouth! The rum develops from rather acidic ester notes to a sweetish pear with a slight eucalyptus note."
"With a drop or two of water, this rum works wonderfully. It is harmonious but also complex. Rather on the spicy side and less funk. It seems older than the 5 years. The rum still has a very good PLV."
"Stands out extremely positively in a direct comparison of the two2016 Hampdens, which were released under the aegis of Velier. Clearly more harmonious and with far better integration of the alcohol."
"Cross-tasting with RX27 & RX11980 I have to raise my initial rating significantly. In direct comparison, better than the new Hampden HLCF Classic 2017, but still a corner behind the Velier HLCF 2010"
