Distilia Foursquare Mizunara & PX Cask Finish (Silver Seal) 1998

A bold and unconventional Foursquare, surprising and multi-layered. The base is solid and recognizable, but the dual maturation takes the profile into new territory: noble wood, dried fruit, and a slightly smoky, almost mushroom-like note, blended with an elegant sweetness likely coming from the PX. The smoky touch is present but not dominant—it’s actually the element that surprised me the most for its uniqueness. Spices, tannins, a hint of salinity, and a toasted undertone accompany the sip from start to finish. Probably not for everyone, but for those looking for a bold and well-crafted rum, this is a memorable experience. For me, absolutely top-tier.

Wow - what a grenade. This extremely complex Foursquare perfectly combines an ingenious base product with the two barrel influences! From nose to palate, in addition to the typical Foursquare aromas, there are also light but very pleasant notes of sherry and whisky. You can also taste incense on the palate and finish, which certainly comes from the Mizunara cask - simply amazing! A slightly burnt undertone accompanies you from nose to finish, but this enhances the taste experience. For me a brilliant rum!

#5864 15.10.2025 Enjoying a few samples after work while listening to the latest trance tracks. Nose Fresh, light wood, faint smoke, fruits, light pineapple, light raisin, light coconut, faint caramel. Palate Oily, light wood, light smoke, peat, light citrus, fruits, spice, light caramel, faint chocolate. Finish Medium long, wood, faint smoke, peat, light citrus, light pineapple. Empty glass Smoke, peat, light floral, faint caramel. This is in my mind an example on how to kill a probvery good rum. The peat just kills the original flavours.

Wow, wat nen geiles Teil, auch wenn er mit Foursquare, meiner bescheidenen Meinung nach, nicht mehr allzuviel zu tun hat. Kokosnuss auch hier erkennbar, aber ansonsonsten recht holzig, wobei ich das Holz nicht wirklich zuordnen kann.

9:On the nose, peat, smoke, toasted wood notes with chocolate, burnt sugar, roasted nuts, leather, fruits with coconut, dried apricots, peaches, hints of sugar cane, complex, as barrel impact of sherry, mizunara finish is obvious, bump into our nosetrils. On aeration, vanilla additionaly softens the angles of mizunara, as the rum becomes very balanced, syrupy, with a help of raisins, citrus and tropical fruits, slightly spicy, sweet. 9:On the palate, the attack is smoky, peated, whisky like, with mizunara barrel impact, the wood is roasted with cocoa, roasted nuts, caramel, leather, spicy with vanilla, frankincense, the fruits are dried like apricots, raisins, figs and prunes, the coconut is toasted, on oxidation some of the fruits become candied, as the molasses herbaceous. 8,9:The finish is long, dry and tannic, medicinal with hints of esters, glue, the oak is roasted, smoky, spicy, the molasses peated and the fruits less intense with coconut, pear, apricot..

Sehr dunkel liegt er im Glas. In der Nase das bekannte Foursquare Profil, aber erweitert durch Aromen von Trockenfrüchten und schön komplex. Am Gaumen ein wirklich schöner Foursquare, sehr fassgetrieben, aber kaum holzig. Das Foursquare Profil wird ergänzt durch Trockenfrüchte und allerhand Gewürze. Im mittellangen Abgang klingt er schön aus, es kommt dann doch noch etwas Bitterkeit dazu. Wirklich ein sehr guter Foursquare, der sich hinter den Velier Abfüllungen nicht verstecken muss. Leider etwas teuer.

Vorab: Herzlichen Dank an Skyfly für das Überraschungssample! Jetzt zur Verkostung: Unglaublich betörende Nase, wirklich sehr, sehr einladend. So gut, dass es kaum steigerungsfähig scheint. Wenn man die perfekte Alkoholintegration dazunimmt, kann hier tatsächlich von einem Ausnahmerum im mittleren 90er Bereich gesprochen werden. Aber nun der Eindruck am Gaumen ... 🙄 Im Gegensatz zu den meisten anderen Bewertungen ist mir die Whisky-Anmutung (Finish?) eindeutig zu dominant. Der Rum schmeckt mir zwar erstaunlicherweise trotzdem ziemlich gut, aber wenn ich einen whiskylastigen Rum auswählen müsste, würde ich den eleganten NY von V&M (France Edition) (RX13824) bevorzugen, auch wenn ich den bei der ersten Verkostung überhaupt nicht gut fand (mittlerweile weiß ich ihn zu schätzen, muss mal bei Gelegenheit meine Bewertung anpassen). Summasummarum halte ich den Distilia für einen vor allem wegen der Nase noch sehr guten Rum, aber mehr als für den RX13824 würde ich für eine Flasche keinesfalls zahlen, eher weniger. Nachtrag: Je länger der Rum atmet, desto aufdringlicher wird die Peated-Whisky-Note - aber ausschließlich am Gaumen. Whisky frisst Rum.

Das Ausgangsprodukt ist von hoher Qualität, aber mir ist das Whisky-Finish viel zu dominant. Harmoniert für mich überhaupt nicht. Aber danke an Skyfly für das Sample. Noch Mal nachverkostet und minimal nach oben korrigiert. Nachdem ich gestern bei einem Whiskytasting war und dort das rauchige als nicht mehr so störend empfunden habe habe ich hier um 0,2 Punkte nach oben korrigiert. Trotz alledem ist mir das torfige rauchige hier zu dominant und zerstört das Foursquare Profil. Wenn ich diese Aromen will dann trinke ich lieber einen Whisky. Aber er scheint ja in der Community großen Anklang zu finden. Jedem das seine.

Auf diesen 98er Foursquare war ich sehr gespannt - insbesondere wegen dem Mizunara Finish. Dieses ist auch mit der für mich typischen Ingwer Schärfe und den intensiven Tanninen zu spüren, wird dazu von einer schönen Sherry Süße und Trockenfrüchte Aromatik begleitet aber ich schmecke - leider - auch rauchigen Whisky raus. Nach etwas genauerer Recherche im Kleingedruckten finde ich raus wie vermutet : der Rum wurde zwischenzeitlich in ex peated Scotch (Bowmore) Fässern gelagert, was ihn leider für mich einiges an Punktabzug kostet, da ich diese Info Genre vorher gewusst hätte. Prominent steht hier vorne nur Mizunara und PX Finish drauf, diese Info hätte man prominenter platzieren können... Alles in allem ein gut gemachter Rum mit erstaunlich gut integriertem Alkohol aber das Whisky Finish und dessen rauchig-salzige (Aschenbecher) Aromatik ist leider für mich ein ziemlicher Abturner und nicht ganz das was ich in einem alten Foursquare suche. Ohne Finish wär vermutlich eine höhere Punktzahl drin gewesen. Würde ich allerdings einen Rum mit gelungenem torfigem Whisky Finish bewerten wäre dieser definitiv unter meinen Top 5! 😃 Aber das hätte man ruhig ebenfalls VORNE auf die Flasche schreiben können und nicht hinten im Kleingedruckten Verstecken...

Sehr komplexes, tiefes Foursquare Profil. Extrem Rauchig und starker Sherry-Einschlag. Die Integration des Alkohols ist nicht gut gelungen. Trotzdem Urgeil in der Nase. Im Mund recht speziell. Seltsame Holznoten (Mizunara??) und scharf-würzig. Schöne Würze im Abgang. Massiv Weihrauch und Harz im leeren Glas. Ein Fousquare ist ein Foursquare ist ein Foursquare. Dieser ist durch das Finish etwas abseits ausgetretener Wege.

Never ever i was so sure about my points , i had the honor to taste it among the samples of distillia , the samples were from the sins and other great stuff , so not even the competition of the sins was at stake , i never had an eye for the sample because it was extra given in the sins samples , at last we opend this sample ex bowmore px cask ..98 … so what ? Boy o boy normaly a great smell and overwelming sweetnes in the nose will result in a flat tasting profile , high abv is also most of the time less smell. This sample is the benchmark of non stop sniffing unbelievable sweet white oak. Then the taste te first 5 sec you knew , yessssss this is the stuff in my dreams , got goosebumps , shaked my head and said this is heaven and hell combined ! Never ever tasted this combination or this rebirth of mizunara( 30years old award winning bowmore cask? Sttttt) and fsq , its the best of both worlds , perfect abv that keeps kicking in 4-5 till at the end , the palet is agressive but so tenderly sweet , the oak but almost no bitterness , the fruit , the nuts, , sweet cherry , … the tiny ether , as gluw , perfect bakanced I tasted it again at warschau and yes what i forgot and what a blind tasted confirmed again , boy this is the best i tasted this year , fenomenal ,it s maybe personally but i never thougth i could find my perfect balanced dream , whisky , rum , flavours there was always a but … if you have the chance to buy it , do,it thx distilia !

Juste Waouh ! 🤩 Pas le 1er finish tourbé que je goûte, mais le seul qui m'ait plu. Pas le 1er Foursquare que je goûte, mais mon préféré à ce jour. On retrouve les marqueurs classiques de chez Foursquare, ce qui a fait leur force mais c'est ce qui m'en a lassé aussi. Mais on a surtout ces magnifiques notes tourbées, tantôt dominantes, tantôt en arrière plan. Longueur incroyable, profil évolutif dans le verre. Une vraie expérience réussie pour moi. Coup de coeur ❤️

Foursquare meets ex-whisky and ex-sherry – and it actually works impressively well. Very smooth and balanced, although the whisky has definitely left its mark: tobacco, smoky peat notes, spices; all of this is supported by heavy sweetness from dried fruits, vanilla, caramel, and chocolate. In terms of complexity, in my opinion the best Foursquare expression. Excellent.

Dégusté entre amis après un bon dîner ! Très belle couleur ! Au nez on a tout de suite l’influence du fût ! Un peu de rondeur avec le fut de sherry mais c’est surtout dominé par le fut de whisky tourbé ! Aussi bien au nez qu’en bouche ! Le foursquare de base est très bon ! Et étant amateur de tourbe ce mariage marche très bien ! Même si peut être dominé un peu trop par cette tourbe on peut perdre un peu le foursquare ! Finale très longue sur la tourbe
