Velier Caroni 100% Trinidad Rum 15 HTR 1998

Super nice and harmonious nose. Compared to the 12-year-old, there's clearly more caramel and, alongside the spicy woodiness, it almost leans towards a cinnamon direction. There's also a bit of meaty character. On the palate, again lots of spice, leather, and wood, as well as dried fruits and vanilla. Brown caramel and roasted nuts plus cinnamon come through. The finish is long and, like the nose and palate, very complex. Wood, caramel, and fruity notes blend harmoniously with leather and earthy accents. I'm amazed at the big difference three years of aging makes. After just under an hour, I can still detect some cherry on the nose. Thanks to @DanielS for the sample.

Epic Velier Caroni Tasting 2023: Das HTR-Profil kommt durch, insgesamt eher trocken, wenig Süsse. Dank der Reduktion gut zugänglich, ohne die ganz grosse Komplexität zu bieten. Davon abgesehen aber ein solider Caroni aus tropischer Lagerung mit klassischem Profil.

Caroni typischer Rum. Jedoch keine grosse Besonderheit in einer niedrigen Trinkstärke. Aromatik ist da, jedoch nicht sonderlich Komplex. Aus der Standard Serie mM. die schwächste der Abfüllungen. Dennoch ein Rum, welcher Spass macht.

Sehr schöner Einstiegs-Caroni in wunderbarer Trinkstärke. Röstiger und mehr Karamell als beim 12er. Fällt im Vergleich zum herausragenden 1996er Jahrgang aber deutlich ab.

Compared to the 12 year old this one is fruitier and it has more complexity and smoothness to it. The nose is typical Caroni and it's rounded and intense with a bit of industrial flavour to it. The palate is very complex and fruity with smoky oak to it. The finish is very long and fruity with smoked oak to it. Price to quality is good.

Easy sipping Caroni. Einfach ein geiles Profil. Relativ rund aber sehr gefällig. Fruchtiger als der 12er, mit mehr Fokus auf der Schokolade. Mir gefällt diese besser als ganz viele Abfüllungen die aktuell auf den Markt kommen.

Sehr geiler caroni. Sehr intensiv, ausbalanciert und komplex. Der 12er und 21er gefallen insgesamt aber dennoch eine gute Spur besser. Dennoch bringt er alles mit was man erwartet : Rauch, Frucht, verbranntes Gummi, Dreck und eine feine Mineralität.

Intense on the nose with some smoke and dirt/chemical notes taking center stage here. Nice dirtyness, not too much complexity and fruits for me only in the background. Reduction doesn’t hurt too much here. More balanced on the palate with more vanilla and chocolate alongside some dirt. Here the reduction in ABV is quite noticeable regulating in a thin(ish) mouthfeel. Not enough power and complexity to make it to the top of the 98 vintage.

8,4:On the nose, the first impression we get is with roasted wood and its notes like caramel, burnt sugar, underneath there are dried fruits, tar and an orange peel. After airing the rum, yellow fruits arise and balance the first dull impression, the wood is charred with chocolate, nuts and caramel, spicy with vanilla and molasses waxy.Some meat notes also appear. 8,5:On the palate, the attack is fruity and woody with an orange, tropical fruits and spicy, roasted wood with caramel, perhaps toffee, nuts, vanilla, becomes dry quickly. Then the industrial notes come out quite intensely with bitter notes like tar, rubber, there is some menthol.The molasses is vegetal with mint, dark with licorice, balances the palate nicely and luckily tasty dried apricots, currants, prunes and peaches that improve rather rough, dull start. 8,5:The finish is long, tastier than before, with notes from the palate lingering on and with some new ones, which improve our tasting experience like red fruits with a raspberry and some smoky charred wood with creamy notes. Edit:23.3.25-resting, oxidation helps, 0,1 higher.

Ein recht guter Caroni mit nicht so ganz ausdrucksstarken klassischen Caroni-Aromen. Das macht ihn zu einem gutem Einstieg in die Caroni-Welt, wenn auch er mir ein wenig zu zahm ist. Er ist dafür aber sehr ausgewogen und süffig

Leichter Caroni mit den typischen Noten. Tolle Aromatik allerdings nicht so komplex wie viele andere Caronis. Sicherlich ein guter Einstieg um in die Welt der Caronis einzutauchen. Der Preis steht hier in keinem Verhältnis mehr.

Un Caroni relativement léger dans sa constitution. Le nez laisse filer la gourmandise dans les premiers instants avec le bonbon au caramel, le toffee et le sucre brûlé. Par la suite, un ton plus sec et sale prend le relais, avec le caoutchouc, le goudron, le pneu de vélo, ce côté fumé si singulier, le cuir, les épices les fruits secs. C’est un profil attrayant et doux, mais qui manque un peu de longueur au nez. L’attaque en bouche revient sur ce toffee au caramel si particulier, qui donne une impression de douceur très marquée. Derrière, le boisé épicé et vanillé, les noisettes grillées et les fruits secs se font une place et confirme la légèreté du profil. Ce n’est qu’après quelques instants en bouche que le côté pétrolifère et fumé émerge tout doucement du palais. L’alcool n’est pas perceptible dans cet amas de gourmandise. La finale est assez longue, sucrée et caramélisée sur le toffee mais un peu plus sèche et amère avec le cuir et la saleté du profil trinidadien. Les épices (vanille et réglisse notamment) sont soutenues par des fruits éparses dans ce manteau de velours. Heureusement que l’étiquette nous rappelle ce à quoi nous avons affaire, car ce Caroni se révèle très gourmand et facile à boire. Il n’est pas aussi complexe et intense que la plupart de ses congénères, mais il a le mérite de proposer une facette plus sobre et douce qu’à l’accoutumée.

Un rhum goûté dans un restaurant, la bouteille est à la moitié. Un nez sur le fruit, peu d’atelier mécanique et comme une acidité. La bouche laisse apparaître comme un carbonique, de l’orange amère et un léger caoutchouc. La finale est un peu courte pour un Caroni. Le verre vide fait la part belle au boisé, au fumé et aux notes d’atelier mécanique. Le moins intéressant de la série 12-15-17-21-100th, mais tout de même un beau Caroni avec un vieillissement tropical.

Die Nase ist zu Anfang recht alkoholisch, ein paar Minuten Zeit im Glas helfen hier. Danach sehr ausgewogen mit viel Fruchtigkeit, Würze und Caroni-Dreck. Am Gaumen auch zuerst pfeffrig scharf, weniger fruchtig, und dafür mehr Tanniene und Teer. Zum Nachklang hin empfinde ich die Bitterkeit als zu stark und störend. Gerade so "sehr gut", gefällt mir am der Nase sehr gut und lässt dann leider nach und ist für meinen Geschmack im Nachklang zu bitter. Das PLV reißt mich nicht vom Hocker.
