"This bottle will be emptied tonight and I already had the first glass and barely one more left in the bottle. I can't find a better occasion for finishing this rum than the slide into 2022. This is also a bottle that was released in my birth year so I know I'm old :-) At least I can add some extra information compared to my old notes. This being a very old vintage rum it is so very different in the flavor profile compared to the releases in the past decades. There is wood from nose to finish. Then there is the typical grass note mixed with spice and fruit. There is also a hint of leather in the profile. I like the spicy tunge on the palate. A very good old rum that didn't come cheap when I bought it in the late 80's"

"Un Single Cask savoureux et maîtrisé. Au nez, les fruits tropicaux (ananas) et les fruits secs ouvrent le bal avant de laisser la canne à sucre, le chêne, les épices, les noix et le caramel prendrent le relais avec une transition tout en finesse. Un rhum élégant et équilibré à l’olfaction. L’attaque en bouche est plus vive et intense. Les épices sont bien plus exubérantes (réglisse et anis notamment, non sans rappeler certains Demerara) et les notes empyreumatiques (café, noix torréfiées, notes rôties et toastées) sont beaucoup plus marquées. Elles confèrent une certaine gourmandise à ce profil très rond et sec. Les fruits secs et exotiques sont moins présents mais savent attiser les papilles. Ce n’est pas le rhum le plus bouleversant, mais il fait preuve d’une remarquable maîtrise. La finale, longue, sèche et sombre, prolongent le plaisir avec les épices, le café, le bois et le cuir, accompagnés de fruits secs et de tanins. Subtile, complexe et raffinée, cette cuvée est trop souvent mise de côté, alors qu’elle a le mérite de représenter ce que Saint James fait de mieux."
