Show all Martinique rumsMartinique is a sunny 436 square-mile Caribbean island in the Lesser Antilles of the West Indies; the French claimed it in 1635, and it is still part of the European country’s territory. The high-quality French standards have helped the Martinique rum industry position itself as the source of the finest sugar cane spirits. This is the only rum style protected by international law with its own appellation of origin or AOP.
The island’s exciting spirit is called Rhum Agricole. Unlike most other Caribbean rums, this one must be made with the purest sugar cane juice and not with the lesser molasses, a by-product of sugar production.
The French-style spirit is distilled to 70% alcohol in column stills with copper condensers (much lower than most other rums) and rectified to a final 40–55% before bottling. The process makes it one of the most flavourful rums in the world. Of course, using the finest French oak barrels is not unheard of on the island, which gives Rhum Agricole an elegant old-world feel.
There are fourteen distilleries in Martinique, and they produce rum from sugar cane juice in several styles. Perhaps the most coveted is the Rhum Vieux or old rum, which ages for at least three years in oak. Spirits labelled as Dark Rum or Rhum Ambré age for 18 months, and a vibrant and uncomplicated White Rum is not aged at all. The latter is best suited for craft cocktails. For French-style rum, Rhum Agricole from Martinique has no equal.

"02.10.2016 - 03.10.2016 A great extended weekend with rum friends. This was a nice event and lots of space between the tables. Only problem was the level of English at some of the exhibitors. I will start with the rums we brought ourselves and then add the ones we tried at the event. Notes Medium to dark in colour. Nose Elegant, balanced, wood, light roasted, sweet, light floral, dried fruit. Palate Smooth, oily, elegant, wood, light roasted, dried fruit, light citrus, light floral, earthy, light chocolate. Finish Medium to long, oily, elegant, balanced, fruity, light citrus, faint floral."

"I just cracked open this bottle because I finished the older brother. Just noticed I didn't score the older ones yet, so I will have to check my binders for it. An absolutely wonderful rum, well balanced, lovely nose and great palate with a perfect medium to long finish. Flibuste is the only brand where I always buy at least 2 bottles of each of their old releases because I know their baseline is ver high. I can only recommend this rum even if you're not an Agricole fan. "

"A privilege to have been able to witness the opening of one of these bottles and to have been able to taste it! A blend of 4 vintages put together beautifully with excellent balance! Very similar to the 1994 Armada but with a more pronounced vegetal part! Another masterpiece!"

"10.07.2020 A nice tasting meeting new and old friends. This was the final rum and it's a very expensive of its kind. These bottles are not only expensive but extremely rare. Palate Velvety, light wood, light roasted, faint nutts, citrus, dried fruit, naturally sweet, faint salt, light herbs. Finish Medium to long, light roasted wood, naturally sweet, light nutts, dried fruit, light chocolate."

"Dove back into a retaste of this one and it's still a very good release. Despite the steep price of 1300, - euro I decided to buy this bottle and opened it for a taste after it arrived yesterday. Wow, this is a great rum, though expensive I must say it's almost a perfect rum."

"This is a great rum and the price to quality is very good in my mind. The nose is fruity with wood, nuts and vanilla with trailing caramel and a nice floral note. The palate has toasted wood and fruit trailed by vanilla, licorice and chocolate. There is also a hint of menthol in there. The chocolate and fruits become very clear in the empty glass. The finish is long and has wood, chocolate and raisin with trailing vanilla."

"Retasting with the RumX guys. -------- This was my favourite of the evening. A lot of lovely oak and oak spices from nose to finish. Dry and kind of sweet at the same time. Wonderful balance between the heavy oak notes, fruits and spices. The sprinkle of chocolate and tobacco makes it a very smooth Agricole."

Top review from crazyforgoodbooze:
"Incredibly good barrel strength Agricole! Extremely complex and intense after green and red chilies, some coconut, banana, honey, plum and cherry, as well as ginger and herbs. The whole thing continues the same way on the palate and the alcohol is surprisingly well integrated. In addition, not too woody for such an old agricole. It gets a bit smokier on the finish, with toasted coconut and some green chile coming back.... Damn this one is really fun! 🤤 Probably by far one of the best depaz of all time!"

"Very nice Agricole. Top!!!The nose like a chord on the guitar, harmonious, very complex, but individual facets are difficult to taste out. Perfect in the mouth. The 2001 is my favorite, still absolute recommendation to buy, as this will be a collector's item in a few years."

Top review from Gunnar Böhme "Bauerngaumen" 🤓:
"Parallel tasting with Dame Jeanne #1, which I had already tasted and rated at the time with 88 points, this assessment remains the same. Dame Jeanne #2 is more mineral and less fruity on the nose and flatter on the palate than #1. The lower alcohol content is noticeable here. Especially against this background, I find the price, which has been significantly increased once again compared to #1, very questionable and cannot recommend buying a whole bottle - a nice sample will do. Update 2024-04-18: I must apologize. In this second tasting (which concludes the small tasting today), I like the rum enough. This time I taste a delicious mixture of heavy fruit bread and Werther's Echten. Simply delicious."

"This is a wonderful rum and the price to quality is very good. I'd say this one is better that its predecessor. More elegant in a way. The nose is intense and fruity with leather, chocolate, wood trailed by light vanilla and nuts. The notes become much clearer once rested for more than 15 minutes. The palate is intense and well balanced with fruit, leather, chocolate as well as light wood and vanilla. The finish is medium to long with dried fruit, coffee and light wood and tobacco. I will have to order a bottle of this rum :-)"

"At the time of release this rum had a very good price tag compared to what you get. The price has already gone up a lot since then and it's a bottle hard to find. The nose is very fruity with wood, vanilla and leather as well as a very light earthy note. The palate is complex, sweet and well balanced with fruits, wood, vanilla and chocolate followed by light notes of tobacco and coffee. The finish is long and warm with dried fruit, wood and chocolate. Leave to rest for at least 15 minutes to get all the flavours."

Top review from Joachim Guger:
"Beautiful nose. Oak dominates, followed by a great glue note and then fruit. Balanced, alcohol well integrated, fresh. In the mouth then a wild ride. Very peppery and powerful. Balanced again on the finish. Very good overall. A very good Agricole, but lacks the brilliant elegance of its two brothers. And meanwhile there is an abundance of similar Agricoles of comparable quality."

"MaJ: Rating adjusted downwards. It's very good but less expressive in a dry ti-punch compared to DePaz 55% (the new reference in white agricole). Original verdict: Clearly above the Dillon 2019 monovarietal. There's a little cellar note that smells musty but, big surprise, it's very pleasant and adds more complexity to the work. If you're thinking in a "should I buy this bottle" sort of way, do you also know that I'm a big incorruptible fan of white rums made with red cane and only red cane. For those who share my taste, highly recommended. Truly high quality. The thick red wax seal around the mouth adds a touch of class to the experience too."
